JULY ISSUE of HOT HOUSE JAZZ GUIDE

James Brandon Lewis

James Brandon Lewis closes his run at the Village Vanguard on Sunday, July 5, with a set that underscores why he is one of the most commanding tenor saxophone voices of his generation. His sound is earthy and explosive yet rigorously structured, threading together free-jazz fire, deep blues feeling, and a keen sense of melody that keeps even his most open improvisations tethered to song. Over the last decade Lewis has emerged as a leading figure in contemporary jazz, drawing on poetry, Black church traditions, and the Coltrane lineage to build music that feels both spiritually charged and sharply present-tense. For more on his work, and on the ideas animating this Vanguard engagement, see the feature article on James Brandon Lewis in the current issue of Hot House. READ MORE

America 250: The Sovereign Inheritance

As the United States tunes up for its 250th birthday, the stages are already booked: orchestras, marching bands, patriotic galas, and anniversary concerts, each with its own program and sponsor. Beneath all of that official celebration runs one defining sound—the blues. Not a generic “African music” or exportable “world rhythm,” but a tone and time feel that could only have emerged here, from enslaved Africans, Indigenous nations, and their descendants finding ways to breathe inside a system built to choke them.

The America 250 article, “The Sovereign Inheritance: Why Black Culture Is Not Public Domain,” argues that this sound—and the broader constellation of Black music it underpins—is not a free resource to be mined by institutions, industries, or algorithms. From Blind Tom Wiggins to cabaret cards, from Mardi Gras Indians to the streaming and AI era, it traces a long pattern of genius monetized by someone else while the people who made the music paid the highest price. At 250 years, the piece insists, the least this country can do is read the guest list correctly and remember who built the house the birthday party is happening in. READ MORE
